dematerialization of the ruin.

Exalting the church ruins and merge the new additions with the surrounding environment are the starting points. The extremization of the ruin enhance the beauty of nature that tries to reclaim what was once hers.

The architectonical intervention regarding the church is punctual and consist in a new roof that wants to be an element of physical closure of the building while trying at the same time to dematerlise itself. Using shaped horizontal slats overlapped the roof is lighter and offers a different perception of itself to the pilgrims as they approach.

the pilgrim center: a symbiosis with nature.

The new addition containing the pilgrim center is a building that wants to blend in with nature and almost disappear by partially sinking into the ground. It’s a loop that formally reinterprets the concept of pilgrimage, with the idea of recreating a path or “loop” within the building itself that is a metaphor for the pilgrim's journey.

The same concept comes back inside the church thanks to a flexible and light system of curtains and seats that allow the use in different occasions. Proposing the loop again on a wider scale will allow the involvement of all the places of interest around the lake of Bolsena. In this new imagined path, the pilgrim center will play a role of interest on a wider territory scale.
