The design for the new Sara Hildén Art Museum aims to create an ensemble that weaves together the existing urban spaces, a (museum) city in the city. The basic concept of the building is to adapt itself to the urban and natural surrounding while keeping in place the existing visual connections and urban relations, becoming a belonging part of the cityscape. That’s why the architecture consists of two distinct volumes that work together: a plinth and a tower. The plinth is refined and matches the grain of the street and the scale of the pedestrians while the tower acts on the scale of the city and makes the museum part of the Tampere skyline

The ground floor large bracket stretches horizontally and takes its cue from the existing buildings: it will be covered with local bricks so to form an harmonious whole with the neighbouring buildings. The first floor becomes more light and transparent so to keep the visual connection from side to side and to let the activities behind it become legible.
